What Can I Donate?

Thank you so much for considering Father Joe’s Villages for your donation! We value each and every donation as they are sold to raise funds for our life-changing programs. We accept most donations of items in gently used and working condition. All donations are sold as is, so they must be clean and in good condition. When we receive an item that cannot be sold in our stores or easily recycled, we have to pay for disposal. This means that less funds go towards helping our neighbors in need. Please read both the list of items we accept and the list of items we are not able to accept.

PICK-UP SCHEDULE

Our drivers pick-up donations between 8 am – 4 pm. We will schedule to pick up your donations on a specific day but we are unable to provide you with the exact time of pick-up. Each day our drivers are juggling multiple pick-ups of varying sizes at many locations, impacting their daily schedule. We value your time, so on your scheduled day we will call you a half an hour before your pick-up allowing you time to prepare.

ITEMS WE ACCEPT

Please read our thorough lists of what donations we can accept and what we can’t. We truly value your donations but there are things that we are not able to accept because they are broken, worn, etc. and due to federal and states regulations and safety concerns.

PACKAGE ITEMS

Items must be gathered and packaged for pick-up. Please ensure all smaller and loose items are secured in bags or boxes. Items not arranged, boxed or bagged will not be picked up.

ENSURE SAFETY

Please ensure all fragile/breakable items (glass, mirrors, etc.) are properly packed to avoid breakage.

MOVE ITEMS TO GROUND FLOOR

For their safety, drivers cannot move furniture up or down stairs. Unless there is a working elevator, all items must be on ground level for pick-up.

PROVIDE ACCURATE COUNT

When scheduling your pick-up the operator will ask you how many bags/boxes or items you have for pick up. Please give an accurate count of items as it helps us ensure there is enough space in our trucks for your donation.

What happens after I submit the pick-up request form?

One of Father Joe’s Villages friendly, trained operators will call to schedule a mutually convenient time to pick up your donation.

What days and times do you pick up donations?

The day and time of your donation pick-up depends on the route in your area. We accept donations from all over San Diego and visit each neighborhood based on demand.

We schedule pick-ups between 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Unfortunately, we cannot schedule a specific pick-up time.

Our driver can call you 30 minutes ahead of time to let you know we are on our way or you can leave the donations out and we will pick them up. If you’d like the driver to call ahead, please let the operator know when they call.

When our operator calls you to schedule a time to pick-up your donations, they will work with you to find a date that is convenient for you.

Do you offer free pick-up services?

Yes, our donation pick-up services are free. If you are able, we are happy to accept cash donations to cover the cost of gas. Our drivers carry donation envelopes.

Each day our drivers are juggling multiple pick-ups of varying sizes at many locations. Each of these things impact their daily schedule. We value your time and we know it is difficult to wait around for our drivers, so on your scheduled day we will call you a half an hour before your pick-up allowing you time to prepare.

Why Can’t I Donate Certain Items?

Old, Broken & Unusable Items

Unfortunately, whenever we receive an item that cannot be sold in our stores or easily recycled, we have to pay for disposal. This means that less funds go towards helping our neighbors in need.

Please only donate items that are in gently-used, new condition or “usable”. We cannot accept furniture or items that are broken, torn or severely damaged. Unusable items are any items that are stained, broken, torn, cracked, peeling, worn, etc. We do not accept anything that needs to be repaired or refinished, as we do not have the means to fix them for resale.

Items Restricted for Resale

Other items, such as cribs, toilets, chemicals, mattresses and more, are restricted for resell by California state law and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Items Restricted for Safety Reasons

We value the health and safety of our staff. To protect the wellbeing of our truck drivers and store employees, our policy is that we cannot accept anything that cannot be carried safely by two people. This means we are unable to accept big items like beds, pianos, pool tables, conference tables, etc. Additionally, our staff cannot move items down steps. If you live above the ground floor, all donations must be moved to the ground floor before pick up.

Where Can I Dispose of the Items You Do Not Accept?
